It takes a village they say ...

You know what they say about bringing up our children. Well it’s much the same with starting a business. Especially when you have just had a major life changing experience. Entering Calgary’s food truck community has been a daunting task. Once Chloe and I made the decision to launch our venture, offers of help and advice came from everywhere. Whenever we mentioned what we would be serving; suddenly baked potatoes seemed to be everyone’s favourite thing to eat! Before I knew it, we had found a commissary kitchen, we had engaged a fabulous Designer, (www.Tomtoons.ca) and had offers to drive the truck and of course to work on it with us! Any entrepreneur will tell you that the minutiae of planning a new business is mind blowing, especially if you haven’t done it before. So, when I was gently pointed in the direction of Momentum’s Self Employment Program, it was a case of nothing ventured, nothing gained. If you haven’t heard about Momentum, check them out. www.momentum.org Their programs cover everything from financial literacy, entrepreneurship and employment training, to developing communication skills, building self-confidence and establishing positive social networks. All this of course, with the end game of supporting new entrepreneurship in Calgary. (Most Canadian big cities have similar Community Support centres and I highly recommend using the programs offered if you don't already have the skills you need) I am beyond grateful to have benefitted from their support. The team of facilitators at Momentum deserve a huge shout out, and they are always looking for new advocates as well as new people who want to realise their potential. The group of 8 people (all new entrepreneurs in their own fields) who came on my new 6 month intensive self employment adventure with me became new family. They were there every day to rally me, to cheer me on and encourage me when another roadblock appeared. The course is amazing and armed with the tools and knowledge it gave me, Souperspudz has been built on a solid foundation of love, collegiate support and friendships.
We are so excited for our new future and the new opportunities SouperSpudz will present us.
