Covid19...Preparing for battle with silver bullets in our kitchens
Updated: Aug 27
Now, more than ever, it is vitally important that we all stay physically and mentally healthy while trying to isolate ourselves from this beastly virus. In my honest opinion there is NOTHING more comforting, more heart and soul warming than a bowl of steaming hot, home made soup, made with love and healthy ingredients.
Our best weapon in this fight (other than social distancing, and isolation) is boosting our immunity ... well, Soup is a perfect vehicle for just that!
Our immune systems consist of organs, cells, tissues, and proteins. Together, these undertake the bodily processes that fight off pathogens, which are the viruses, bacteria, and foreign bodies that cause sickness. When the immune system comes into contact with a pathogen, it triggers an immune response, releasing antibodies, which attack pathogens and kill them. It is accepted that incorporating specific foods into the diet may strengthen a person’s immune response.
So you see, it's quite simple. A good soup, made with the right stuff, can build up a robust immune system, and can comfort us in challenging time, reducing our anxiety levels and inhibiting the production of Cortisol, the stress hormone which can nibble away at our body's immune system and ability to fight viruses and bacteria.
The right stuff?
The first is love. You can't buy this stuff. It's more valuable than gold and diamonds. It can't be rushed and it can't be faked. But true love and caring is in every one of us, and when we share it in our preparation and serving of food in times of struggle, it adds an unknown quality that transcends flavour or culinary expertise. It just makes everything taste better!
The second is ingredients. Local, organic (if possible), in season (if possible) and the fresher the better. Covid 19 has turned up at a very inconvenient time of year for soup making! Our winter veggies are just coming to an end, and our summer varieties are still incubating and working on growing to feed us later in the year! I've learned this to my cost! - but you CAN still get hold of some terrific soup ingredients which will help build your body's army of virus fighters.
Local farmers' markets,(@Calgaryfarmersmarket)(@justripe)(@LokalYYC) (@poplarblufforganics) local growers co-operatives (@YYCgrowers) and produce suppliers are all still very well stocked with amazing vegetables, nature's own medicine cabinet - and we need to be using them!
